A bottle of hand soap is mostly packaging. The soap runs out in a few weeks, and a bottle and pump that still work perfectly well go into the bin. A hand soap refill keeps the bottle on your counter and replaces only the part you used up.
Below, a refill pouch goes up against a new bottle, using our own Hand Wash and Hand Wash Refill: price per ounce, plastic, a clean way to pour, and the few times buying new still wins.
The short answer
Refill. Our 1L Hand Wash Refill costs $88 for 33.8 fl oz, about $2.60 an ounce, against $3.00 an ounce for a 12 oz Hand Wash bottle at $36. It fills up to three bottles and reduces plastic use by 92%. Buy a new bottle when you need your first one, a gift, or a scent the pouch does not come in.
Hand soap refills vs new bottles at a glance
Once you own a bottle, the refill wins
- $2.60 per fl oz, against $3.00 in a new bottle
- Fills up to 3 bottles with 92% less plastic
- Keeps the pump you already own in use
Both put the same soap in your hands, so this is not a quality decision. A non toxic hand soap refill from Homecourt is the bottle's exact formula: argan oil to moisturize, Australian hibiscus flower extract, and coconut-derived surfactants that lift dirt without stripping skin. Phthalates, triclosan, formaldehyde-releasers and methylisothiazolinone stay on our never list in either container.
You are really choosing a container, and a price. The pouch comes in five of the bottle's six scents; Balsam Fireplace, our seasonal one, is bottle only.

Cost: What a hand soap refill saves
A hand soap refill saves about 13% per ounce on a one-time order and about 22% on a subscription.
Our Hand Wash is $36 for 12 oz, or $3.00 per fluid ounce. A non-toxic hand soap refill of the same formula is $88 for 33.8 fl oz (1 liter), which comes to $2.60.
We call the pouch a $108 value because it fills up to three bottles, and three bottles cost $108. Strictly, 33.8 oz is a little short of three full 12 oz bottles, which hold 36 oz. Compare by the ounce instead: 33.8 oz bought as bottles would cost $101.40, or $13.40 more than the pouch.
All three ways to buy, side by side:
- New bottle: $36 for 12 oz, or $3.00 per fl oz
- Refill, one-time order: $88 for 33.8 fl oz, or $2.60 per fl oz
- Refill on Subscribe & Save: $79.20 for 33.8 fl oz, or $2.34 per fl oz
Subscribe & Save takes 10% off and ships free on every delivery, which puts the pouch $22.20 under the same soap in bottles. One-time orders ship free in the US from $100; a refill alone falls short of that line, and a refill plus a bottle clears it.
A luxury hand soap refill will never match a warehouse-store gallon jug per ounce, and it is not trying to. If you already like the soap, what matters is skipping the bottle: about $13 saved a pouch, $22 on subscription.
Waste: Plastic free hand soap & pouch refills
The pouch takes this round easily, though it is not plastic free. Our 1L kraft-paper pouch reduces plastic use by 92%.
Our bottles are blown from 100% post-consumer recycled PET, recycle code #1, the most readily recyclable plastic in use. Pumps are the problem. As our sustainability page explains, they are not recyclable, only reusable, and every new bottle brings another one home.
Scale makes the case. According to the EPA plastics facts, containers and packaging made up more than 14.5 million tons of plastic waste in the United States in 2018, the largest share of any category, while only 8.7% of all plastic was recycled that year. PET bottles and jars did better, at 29.1%. That still leaves about seven in ten unrecycled.
Truly plastic free hand soap is usually a bar wrapped in paper. For liquid soap at the sink, a pouch gets you most of the way, and zero waste hand soap stays a goal, since a pouch with a cap is still packaging.
What makes a sustainable hand soap is mostly the packaging you stop buying. An eco friendly hand soap label means little if a bottle and pump hit the trash every month.
How to refill a soap bottle without mess
Two minutes, one rule: empty first, then fill. The CDC's guideline for hand hygiene in healthcare settings advises against adding soap to a partially empty dispenser, because topping off can lead to bacterial contamination of the soap. A home sink is not a hospital, but the habit costs nothing.
- Use the bottle until it is empty.
- Unscrew the pump. Rinse the bottle with warm water and pump warm water through until it runs clear.
- Let the bottle and pump dry upside down on a towel.
- Stand the bottle in the sink, open the pouch and pour slowly. Each 12 oz bottle takes about a third of the pouch.
- Stop below the shoulder so the pump tube has room, screw the pump back on and close the pouch.
The Homecourt Hand Wash bottle is a refillable hand soap bottle meant to stay on the counter, and the pouch has its own spout, so there is no funnel to wash.

When a new bottle makes sense
When the bottle wins
You need one to start, since a refill needs something to fill. Balsam Fireplace comes in the bottle only. For a gift, a full bottle looks better than a pouch: the Hand Duo pairs Hand Wash with Hand Cream for $71, against an $81 value. And if your bottle cracks or its pump quits, replace it.
For hand soap refill bulk buying, a subscription is simplest: a pouch every 30, 60 or 90 days, 10% off and shipped free. If the kitchen sink goes through soap fast too, all Homecourt refills work the same way, including the Dish Soap Refill at $52 and the Surface Cleaner Refill at $46.

Hand soap refill FAQ
Quick answers at the sink
How many times can you refill a soap bottle?
We do not put a number on it. A PET bottle and its pump can be refilled as long as both work, rinsed and dried between fills. Replace the bottle if it cracks or the pump stops priming, and since our pumps cannot be recycled, keep each one going as long as you can.
Do refill pouches really cut plastic?
Yes. Our 1L Hand Wash Refill reduces plastic use by 92%, and each pouch replaces up to three bottles and their pumps. EPA data from 2018 put the recycling rate for PET bottles and jars at 29.1%, so a bottle you never buy beats one you recycle.
Can you mix scents in one bottle?
You can, since every scent shares the same Hand Wash base, but we would not. Finish one scent, rinse, then switch. Mind the label, too: a Cece bottle filled with Neroli Leaf will still say Cece.
