How to Clean Quartz Countertops

Mild soap, warm water, a dry cloth.

Quartz is engineered stone bound with resin, so it never needs sealing. A daily wipe with dish soap and warm water keeps it that way, and the few stains that stick come off without harsh chemicals.

How to Clean Quartz Countertops

Quartz countertops are sold on low maintenance, and the pitch is mostly true. The surface is ground quartz held in a polymer resin, which makes it nonporous. Spills sit on top rather than soaking in, which is why coffee, wine and oil wipe away when you reach them in time.

The catch is the resin. It makes quartz easy. It is also the part that bleach or acid damages and a hot pan or a scouring pad will mark. Clean it gently and often, and save anything firmer for the rare mark that will not budge.

The best quartz countertop cleaner is already at your sink. Iowa State University Extension's countertop guidance comes down to a warm, wet dishcloth, and quartz makers such as Cambria add only a little mild soap. For daily use, that is the whole of what to clean quartz countertops with.

Our note on gentle dish soap explained covers what counts as mild. A Dish Soap Refill keeps the sink stocked: one 1 L pouch fills two bottles and uses 92 percent less plastic.

Here is how to clean quartz countertops in the time a kettle takes to boil. Cleaning quartz countertops this way every day keeps the stain section below mostly theoretical.

The short answer

Wipe quartz daily with warm water and a drop of mild dish soap on a soft cloth, rinse with a clean damp cloth and dry it. Lift dried food with a plastic scraper, break down grease with dish soap left to sit for a few minutes, and treat rust marks and hard water spots with the same soap and a non-scratch pad rather than acids or bleach. Keep abrasive pads, oven cleaner and acidic cleaners off the surface, and put hot pans on a trivet.

What to clean quartz countertops with

The shortest shopping list in the house

  • 01
Mild dish soapA drop or two in warm water. Plant-based surfactants lift grease without stripping the finish.
  • 02
Soft clothsMicrofiber or soft cotton, one damp and one dry. Nothing with a scrubbing side.
  • 03
Plastic scraperA putty knife or an old gift card for dried food. Never a razor blade.
  • 04
Non-scratch spongeFor stains only. The package should say non-scratch or safe for glass.
  • 05
Warm waterFor washing, and for the rinse that stops soap film dulling the surface.

Step 1: Clear crumbs & spills right away

Blot first, wipe second

Sweep crumbs into your hand with a dry cloth before a wet one drags them across the surface. Blot liquid with a paper towel. Wiping spreads it. Iowa State's guidance is to clean up spills and sticky foods as soon as they happen, and on quartz that timing is most of the battle: tomato sauce wiped within a minute leaves nothing, and the same splash left overnight is a stain to treat.

Step 2: Wash with mild dish soap & warm water

A drop is enough

Add one or two pumps of dish soap for cleaning quartz countertops to a bowl of warm water, wring a soft cloth until damp, and wash the whole counter in overlapping passes. Homecourt Dish Soap uses plant-derived surfactants and glycerin, so it cuts kitchen grease and stays gentle on hands, the same standard quartz makers set for the counter.

Too much soap is its own problem. The Natural Stone Institute notes that excess cleaner leaves a film and streaks, so keep the water lightly soapy and rinse afterward. For how to clean white quartz countertops, this step and the next matter most: pale slabs show soap film and water spots that a busy pattern hides.

Step 3: Rinse & dry to prevent water spots

The step that keeps white quartz white

Wipe again with a clean cloth dampened in plain water, then dry. Minerals left to evaporate become the chalky spots people mistake for stains, and drying removes them before they form.

Step 4: How to remove stains from quartz countertops

Four marks & the gentlest fix for each

Patience does most of the work here. Marks on quartz sit on the surface rather than in it, so how to remove stains from quartz countertops comes down to soap and a non-scratch pad. Work through the four below from gentlest to firmest and stop when the mark is gone.

Lift dried food with a plastic scraper
Low angle, light pressure

Hold a plastic scraper or an old gift card at a shallow angle and push dried sauce or candle wax off in short strokes. Soften a stubborn patch first under a cloth soaked in warm soapy water for five minutes. Skip razor blades and metal spatulas. Cambria's care guidance notes that cutting on the surface can leave marks, especially on solid-color designs, and a blade does the same.

Treat oil & grease stains
Dish soap is the degreaser

Butter and cooking oil leave a dull patch that water alone will not shift. Put a pump of dish soap on the spot with a splash of warm water and leave it five to ten minutes so the surfactants can surround the oil. Work it with a non-scratch sponge in small circles, then rinse and dry. For how to get stains out of quartz countertops that have been there a while, repeat the soak. Do not scrub harder.

Remove rust stains from quartz
Soap first, never a rust remover

A rust ring under a cast iron pan or a wet steel wool pad is usually a deposit on the resin, not a stain inside it. For how to remove rust stain from quartz countertop surfaces, start with the soap and soak method above and a non-scratch pad, two or three rounds of it.

Do not reach for a rust remover made for laundry or toilets. The Natural Stone Institute warns that many of them contain traces of hydrofluoric acid, which attacks the silicates in quartz itself. If soap does not shift the mark, ask the fabricator who installed the counter before trying anything stronger.

Fade hard water marks
Dry cloth, not vinegar

Vinegar is the usual advice for mineral rings on stone, and on quartz it is the wrong tool. The chalky rings around the faucet and under the dish rack are minerals from evaporated water, and for how to remove hard water stains from quartz the first move is mechanical: a damp cloth, a drop of dish soap and a non-scratch pad, then a dry cloth. Acid trades a water spot for a dull patch in the resin. Prevention is cheaper: dry around the sink after every wash.

Step 5: Quartz countertop cleaning mistakes to avoid

Five habits the resin will not forgive

Manufacturers' do-not-use lists agree with university extension guidance. Iowa State stone countertop care puts it simply: avoid bleach and harsh, acidic cleaners, and never set hot pans directly on quartz.

  • Bleach and oven cleaner. Both are on Cambria's list of products that damage the surface.
  • Any acid. Vinegar and lemon are fine on a cutting board, not on the counter.
  • Abrasive pads and powders. They scratch the polished resin, and the scratches hold dirt.
  • Hot pans straight from the stove. Sudden heat can damage the surface, especially near edges. The manufacturers' answer is a trivet.
  • Sealers and polishes. Quartz does not need them, and Cambria notes they wear off and leave the gloss dull or uneven.

Quartz countertop FAQ

What people ask us

Do Quartz Countertops Stain?

Rarely, and almost never permanently. The nonporous surface keeps spills on top, so coffee and wine wipe away if you reach them the same day. Do quartz countertops stain at all, then? Only when something sits for hours, a rust ring or dried food, and even those mostly lift with dish soap and a non-scratch pad.

Can You Use Vinegar on Quartz?

Not as a habit. Can you use vinegar on quartz once? A quick wipe is unlikely to show damage, but Iowa State Extension's guidance and Cambria's do-not-use list both rule out acidic cleaners. Dish soap and warm water handle every job vinegar gets suggested for, hard water spots included.

What Is the Best Way to Clean Quartz Countertops?

The best way to clean quartz countertops is the three-step daily routine: blot spills as they happen, wash with warm water and a drop of mild dish soap on a soft cloth, then rinse and dry. That is how to clean quartz countertops per Iowa State Extension and the quartz makers' own care guides, and it costs nothing extra. It also prevents nearly every stain above.
